offices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies are now facing considerable backlash as ESG becomes a hot-button political topic &#8212; and this scrutiny is expected to continue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent survey by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conference-board.org\/publications\/barrons-ESG-backlash-is-real-and-growing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Conference Board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of more than 100 large U.S. companies, nearly half said they have already experienced ESG backlash, and 61% expect it to persist or intensify in the next two years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those companies suggest federal and state officials and candidates as the leading source of backlash today. CSR Board panel, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/go.board.org\/state-of-esg-in-2024\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The State of ESG in 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, panelists echoed a similar sentiment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/daniel-pellegrom-335b853\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel Pellegrom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Director of ESG and Corporate Responsibility at Leidos, said while it&#8217;s upsetting to watch terms like ESG and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) become more controversial, ultimately, their work isn&#8217;t changing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re still focused on our goals, our community engagement, and the benefits of a diverse workforce,&#8221; Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trent Riley, Director of ESG Reporting and Analytics at AbbVie, agreed and said that, based on his experience, most companies feel similarly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Really, it&#8217;s not going to change our focus at all,&#8221; Political headwinds in the U.S. should be considered, but they don&#8217;t represent the appetite worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, during the ESG &amp; CSR Board panel, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andrya-clark-30b96362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrya Clark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Senior Director of Sustainability at Smith+Nephew, shared that as a U.K.-based company, ESG backlash has been less prevalent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you need to keep a pulse on the media, it&#8217;s more important that you&#8217;re listening to your stakeholders and proactively getting in front of the board to communicate your strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an informal poll, a majority of members said their leadership is significantly influenced by the shifting winds of controversy around ESG.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, this skepticism doesn&#8217;t have to be discouraging.
