Securing a team with the necessary skills and experience may be the most crucial.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that the demand for privacy expertise is exploding. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/info.trustaffingpartners.com\/2022-data-privacy-jobs-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">job report by TRU Staffing Partners<\/a> highlighted a 30% year-over-year increase in privacy roles from 2021 to 2022, and the trend is expected to accelerate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/rachaelhaher_tru-staffing-partners-privacy-expert-earns-activity-6891751272777928704-9whn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rachael Haher<\/a>, VP of Business Development and Account Management at TRU Staffing Partners said in the report, \u201cEveryone is clamoring over a shortage of talent in privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also suggests these talent attraction issues are exacerbated by misalignment of job requirements, titles, and reporting structure.<\/p>\n<p>As a data privacy leader, how do you determine the specific roles and skills you need, and how do you actually find the right individuals?<\/p>\n<h2>A Growing Need for More Technical Skillsets<\/h2>\n<p>During a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/go.board.org\/scaling-your-data-privacy-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Privacy Board panel on scaling your program<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/patrickchavez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patrick Chavez<\/a>, Chief Privacy Officer and Associate General Counsel at Edward Jones shared how they\u2019ve grown their team.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to a few years ago, Patrick said the program was very lean, and the first priority was bringing in legal expertise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re finding that we have some attorney roles filled out, now we need analyst and manager roles, and those have proven to be a little bit of a challenge,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick is not alone in this roadblock. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jennifer-harkins-garone-a733252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jennifer Garone<\/a>, Senior Director of Privacy and Information Governance at Carnival, also touched on this growing need for technical roles such as engineers.<\/p>\n<p>She said that while privacy roles tend to lean on consultative \u201csoft skills,\u201d when it comes to tasks like testing and verifying that a webpage is compliant with <a href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/privacy\/ccpa#:~:text=The%20CCPA%20applies%20to%20for,%2C%20households%2C%20or%20devices%3B%20or\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CCPA<\/a>, it\u2019s helpful to have engineers.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, TRU Staffing\u2019s report found that while privacy lawyers were in demand for years, the industry is seeing a growing need for more technical expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Rachael Haher wrote, \u201cA shift is coming. The technical privacy professional is the next big talent pool that we have to create.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report goes on to suggest that while many current privacy professionals will ramp up their technical skillset, this talent pool will likely fill up with engineers. This is because it\u2019s considered easier to train someone with a technical background on privacy rather than the reverse.<\/p>\n<h2>Be Open to Nontraditional Candidates<\/h2>\n<p>Considering the surging demand for talent, privacy leaders may want to shop for nontraditional candidates across the enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>During the panel, Workday Senior Director of Privacy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/christina-kogan-65ba2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christina Kogan<\/a> said she\u2019s somewhat infamous for doing just that. She said she\u2019s hired people from other teams, such as commercial attorneys, and trained them up, and this tactic has been successful.<\/p>\n<p>Christina said it\u2019s faster and easier to train someone on privacy than it is to show someone the ins and outs of operations and what aspects of privacy matter most to the company.<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the enterprise privacy champions and said, \u201cI find that you can tell a lot about a person, whether they\u2019re going to be successful in a privacy role, based on how they handle privacy in their current role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer echoed these thoughts and shared that while working in a human resource privacy program, she hired intelligent and curious candidates with HR backgrounds and successfully trained them on privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, she said she\u2019s recently hired a former professional athlete for an entry-level position because of their clear ability to take initiative.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We need to keep an open mindset about who can do what. Who can have the skills to ask the questions and be curious and learn as opposed to do they have a privacy background?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Jennifer Garone, Carnival<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>What Makes a Good Privacy Professional<\/h2>\n<p>Advancements in technology will always require new skills and knowledge \u2014 today, data and generative artificial intelligence come to mind. For this reason, Patrick said it\u2019s important for your team to keep their eyes on the horizon and be open to learning and development opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>In an evolving industry like privacy, Christina added that you\u2019ll want to look for individuals who aren\u2019t afraid of new tech.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, she said she\u2019s still focused on a lot of the soft skills, particularly collaboration, good judgment, teachability, and curiosity. There\u2019s often someone else in the organization with the subject matter expertise to assist in areas like AI. However, what Christina said she really needs are people with relationship-building skills.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Yesterday, it was blockchain; today, it\u2019s generative AI.
